802.11a is a known and certified protocol since September 1999. It used Ofdm modulations and has a maximum speed of 54Mbps. Because it operates on higher frequencies that the two protocols mentioned above, it is incompatible with them, so no connections can be made between them. In some countries, using these frequencies is not allowed without a license, so this is what makes the protocol less popular, even if the equipments are in fact cheaper.

802.16 has been a valid wireless protocol since 2004 and it can use varied frequencies, some licensed and other unlicensed. The WiMax flexibility can offer involving prices for a varied range of services as VoiP telephony, video surveillance, distance monitoring, e-learning, ad-hoc networks for companies. This is often used by fellowships and juridical persons.

For persons with bad intentions, who are very well trained in the field, the safety of all wireless protocols is questionable. The basic safety methods that have been implemented in Wi-Fi protocols assure a pretty low level of security, which pretty much stopped them from taking over for a while.
